Sew Start to Finish Beginners Techniques with Geraldine Sykes starting 4 April 2025
Come along and join Geraldine to improve your sewing knowledge with essential techniques in clothing creation.
Full day 10am - 4pm. You can attend individual classes at £43 or all for for £132 (£33 each).
Day 1: 4 April 2025: Use of Commercial Patterns and Garment Embellishment
You will address some of the issues around using commercial patterns, how to measure the body correctly, reading and using a commercial pattern. Selecting the correct fabric. Selecting and constructing seams suitable for your chosen fabric and finishing the seam
In addition, applique, apply fabric onto fabric, workiing with lace and using embroidery stitches on your sewing machine to decorate.
Day 2: 9 May 2025: Tying It Together
Knowing what fastenings are available and how to put them into a garment can make the garment move from a well made outfit to that WOW piece of clothing and includes: selecting the correct fastening for your garment; looking at different fastenings to use; knowing which is the most suitable zip to use for a chosen garment; inserting 3 different types of zips into different frabrics; and, how to sew on hooks and eyes, press studs and decorative frogs.
Day 3: 6 June 2025: What a Difference a Pocket or Button Can Make
Buttons and pockets don't seem a logical mix until you realise what a welt pocket or a bound buttonhole might do. You will cover: pockets in general; buttons and covered buttons; buttonholes including a welt buttonhole; making pockets for trousers and jackets and patch pockets for shirts and blouses.
Day 4 - 4 July 2025: How to Look Flat and Square
Sleeves, hems, facings and collars can be a real challenge until you master interfacings and which one to use when. Plus getting everything to sit flat and remain so while stitching. The day includes:
- choosing the right interfacing for your project
- the need for pressing
- types of sleeves
- inserting sleeves
- the best way to sew on facings
- making collars work
- hems.
