We had great fun in the office this spring creating a time lapse video for a new class – The Book Thief.
Watch as Purple Boots takes a simple lead sculpture – built around an old book and using an armature to create a figure – and brings it to life. Look carefully at all of the embellishments that are added in each stage and the use of the blue Powertex to really make the book pop. Old bits of lace, keys and string are combined with elements made from self hardening clay to produce interesting effects. At some points the details seem to vanish as the Powertex is applied to embed them into the base.
Watch further and you will see the use of dry brushing techniques. The smallest amount of pigment and Powertex’s own varnish create beautiful end results. All those details which seemed to vanish are now prominent again and we think the copper compliments the bright blue beautifully. A perfect gift for any bookworm and a great decoration for the mantle piece of any bookcase at home.

Our sponsored puppy, Zuri, is now nearly 6 months old. Michelle Roberts, Puppy Partner Coordinator, has been kind enough to send us an update on her progress from her socialiser Judy.
“Zuri is maturing into a lovely young lady; very feminine, bright and extremely loving. She wakes up early every morning just as the first train passes close to our house! She really enjoys her walks and we are very lucky to live close to a beach and nature reserve. Her recall off her lead is really good. She returns to us when we whistle but expects a treat straight away.
Zuri’s general behaviour when out and about is very good and she is calm for her age but, as you’d expect, she’s very inquisitive when she is somewhere new and friendly with strangers. She is such an attractive dog that lots of people want to stop and stroke her. She gets very excited so we ask her to sit before people are allowed to say hello; this stops her from jumping up which is very important. At home she is doing well and has made herself very much at home. She’s full of energy and fun, very mischievous and happy when she’s right in the middle of everything that’s going on. She loves playing and has a wide selection of toys to choose from – by far her favourite, a Kong with kibble inside, no surprise there; she will happily eat anything you give her with great enthusiasm.”

Purple boots is usually a name linked with Powertex and messy art but I do love a bit of yarn! I couldn’t help buying some of the beautiful new yarn that just hit the shop – Dreamcatcher.
Dreamcatcher is the first of the new yarns from Stylecraft for 2019. It is available in six shades and is a beautiful, DK weight mélange of colours in a roving style yarn with 10% wool. The colour change is phased so that the shades shift gradually, making it perfect for the trans-seasonal designs.
I have grabbed my hook and a virus shawl is well on the way. I love the way that there is a far wider variety of colour in the yarn than there first appears by looking at the side of the cake. I often add a plain stripe to my virus shawls but I am pretty sure this won’t need one as the contrast is so good. Watch this space for updates as my shawl develops.
